Project Description:
Preservation and sterilisation of decellularised TE scaffolds (ESR12)

The aim of this Fellowship is to assess a range of current and novel disinfection/sterilisation and preservation techniques on the structure, integrity and function of decellularised human and animal tissue scaffolds for cardiovascular applications. The results will outline optimal disinfection/sterilisation and preservation methods, and highlight any tissue/species specific differences. Pulmonary and aortic valve roots (human and porcine), small intestine (porcine) and pericardium (porcine/bovine) will be decellularised according to previously established methods. The decellularised scaffolds will be treated with a cohort of sterilisation or preservation protocols, and will be assessed against their untreated counterparts in terms of induced cytotoxicity, structural/biomechanical alterations and integrity, functionality and durability.
